How to make a frilly scarf from a T-SHIRT!!

IMG_2453

Jane is back!  Remember Jane?  She is showing off the hottest accessory yet!  You can make one for yourself, or for a gift!  And the best part about it?  If you have some old tee shirts, its free!  If not, hurry over to Walmart.  Last week they had their men's XL and larger sizes of Faded Glory brand tees on clearance for $3.00! (I suggest you call ahead first before making the trip over).  You can also buy them at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon.  If you have A.C. Moore or Michaels craft stores, you can call there as well.

I found that it's  best to use a size XL or bigger shirt to make this craft.  If you can't find one, you can use multiple smaller size tee shirts in the same color (you probably have a few white ones that you can round up.  I supposed you could even dye them with fabric dye if you wanted to).  I have included the link to the video on how to make them-just keep in mind that I found you will want to have at least 10 "circles" to make the scarf look nice.  Here is the link

Time to raid your husband's closet?!  I will be showing my young women from church how to make these in a couple of weeks.  I think it's a great gift idea.  I'm loving my red scarf.  Guess what else I am loving that is red?

My adorable niece in her red dress!  By the way, doesn't she look like she could  be Meg Ryan's daughter?!!

  1. Oh my word. It's like someone shrunk Meg Ryan! She's adorable.

Thanks for the tutorial link - looks gorgeous and I think my 9yo could even do it. Woot! BTW, one could go to a fabric store for more color/print options in t-shirt knit and jersey.

    1. Great job for publishing such a beneficial web site. Your web log isn’t only useful but it is additionally really creative too. There tend to be not many people who can certainly write not so simple posts that artistically. Continue the nice writing cute tees

  2. Jen, that is so funny. After I posted, I thought the same thing about getting the fabric at the fabric store too! They are always having sales, and you can use coupons there too. (I'm guessing the jersey fabric isn't too expensive to begin with anyway) Your nine year old could totally do this! Also, I think it could even be done without the fabric glue if you don't have any. Unless you want to wash it, tying it should be sufficient. I had some temporary bond fabric glue I used.

  5. Your scarf looks much longer than the ones on the program... did you do something different to get more length?????

    ReplyDelete
  6. Schmangela,
I didn't do anything different, but it may look longer because it is on a mannequin? Also, I have heard that depending on how you cut the spiral, it can be a different look. (I cut about a 2" spiral like they did). I also made sure that the middle of the spiral was the part that hung down on the bottom because I thought that part looked fuller. Another tip is to not overlap a lot of the fabric when you glue at the top. That would help make it longer also. :)

  7. Thanks so much for the tips, and the speedy reply! I love the look of this and am going to try it as soon as a scrounge up some fabric...

  8. Gorgeous, and thank you for sharing! I do feel kinda silly asking how the strips attach to each other?!?! The video doesn't show the process, and I'm wondering how yours looks so long and full (even on the mannequin!).

  9. My little bubble,

The strips attach with fabric glue (make sure you buy permanent). Just barely overlap the outer ends of the spirals (maybe 2") and press them together with a dime sized amount of the glue. I made sure to have the innermost part of the spiral to be the part that hangs down. It looks more full that way. You could also sew them together rather than using fabric glue if you don't have any.

See my comment above to Schmangela for additional help and tips. Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck!

  13. I just made one of these from a 2XL t-shirt and it didn't turn out full enough for my liking, but luckily I bought a 3 pack of shirts and will just add another color! :) To put mine together, I just overlapped the ends a little as you suggested and safety pinned them. Then I took my fifth circle and tied it around the safety pinned ends, like the did in the video. Worked great and was much easier and faster!!

  14. Niki,

What a great idea to safety pin them! Some of the girls from our youth group mixed colors also. They were especially cute in their high school colors!

  15. My daughters and I made this scarf tonight...Thanks so much for posting on Pinterest!!!!! Ours didn't turn out as long as yours, but I now remember you stating that you went with 10 inches for the circle versus 9 inches..I think this would probably make up the difference as well. I think I will try a larger circle as well next time.

  16. congrats Jana! You will have to make the infinity scarf with your daughters sometime also. It was shown on the clip, and is super easy and cute. Only two cuts, stretch it and your done! I love that one also.

  17. Robyn! I so love your blog!!! The other day I had a morning to myself, and I just sat at the coffee shop and read your blog. What a treat! Thank you!!! I just made two of these scarves this morning, and I love them! I've passed the post along, as well. I did use a pretty big circle - the size of our dinner plates, and it is full. Love it!!!

  18. Rebecca,

I'm so glad you like my blog! I would love to see your scarves. I just made the infinity scarf from my husbands old gray t-shirt that I was about to throw away! I love how it turned out as well. And I really love that it only required two cuts and now sewing! It was so great to hear from you!

  20. I made one of these scarves tonight. Bought a $5.99 XXXL t-shirt from Hobby Lobby. I was able to get fourteen 10" circles from it and used them all in the scarf. I found that if I cut the spirals in different widths (some 2" and up to around 3 1/2", of course i didn't actually measure, just winged it) then the length of the "strand" varied which I really liked in the finished scarf. Since I'm not a no-sew kinda gal (plus I'm way too impatient to wait for glue to dry) I sewed the ends together with the sewing machine. Love it, and my daughters are itching to make their own. Just wanted to share my experience and say thanks for the post!!

  21. You're welcome Jeannine!

Thank you for the great tips! I wish I could see your scarf~I'll bet it is beautiful and full! I can't believe you got so many circles out of one shirt! That's fantastic...I'll have to pick up an xxxl and try it out!

  22. How big did you made the circles for the scarf? I made them about 8 inch and the don´t really look that "fluffy" like on the picture.

  26. The Frilly Scarf out of t-shirt....
This sample 'orange' scarf isn't made in the way the DIY tshirt scarfs are made. First, you can tell it's not cotton, it's a nylon (you can tell by the way it hangs and the thinness at the top where tied), next it has stitching along the edges instead of being 'pulled' like the tshirt version. You can see that too on the curl fringe near the top left. It's pretty clear. Finally... the length of this scarf and the width of the frills would not be possible with a 9 or 10 inch plate. You'd need far larger circles. Why give a sample that isn't what the video actually teaches? I agree the scarf is great but I would have rather seen the real thing than a designer version that isn't the same. I find this kind of misrepresenting!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Kimzilla,

Nope, it is not designer, but I'm glad it looks that way! I think you looked at the wrong tutorial. There are two of them. There is no pulling involved in this tee shirt. There are two different tutorials. The one you looked at is not made with the circles. It is made by cutting off the bottom of the t shirt.

Also, this one is red, not orange and is displayed on a mannequin that I picked up from the thrift store. I took the photo right next to my front door. I made it from a cotton t shirt, not nylon. I made it in my own home with my own paper plate. It is the real thing, not designer, and no misrepresenting. There is no stitching whatsoever. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusions that you did (other than looking at the wrong tutorial), but I can assure you that I made it just the same way as all my readers! I hope you try making one as they are very easy and cute!
